What are Achilles tendon problems?
The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscles to the heel bone and plays a crucial role in running and jumping. Overuse, incorrect technique or poor shoes can lead to irritation or inflammation of the tendon.
Complaints
- Pain just above the heel or in the tendon itself
- Stiffness on getting up or after resting
- Swelling or tenderness along the Achilles tendon
- Difficulty running, jumping or climbing stairs
What can a podiatrist do?
- Analysing foot position and walking technique
- Advice on footwear and cushioning
- Support soles or orthoses to relieve tendon strain
- Exercises for stretching and strengthening calf and foot muscles
Recovery
Recovery focuses on reducing pain and improving load capacity. By relieving the tendon and doing the right exercises, the Achilles tendon can gradually recover. Preventive counselling helps prevent recurrence and make movement pain-free again.
