Bursitis Subtrochanterica

What is Bursitis Subtrochanterica?

Bursitis Subtrochanterica also called tochanterbursitis or trochanteric pain is an inflammation of the bursa located on the outside of the hip, just below the large trochanter of the thighbone. This bursa normally allows muscles to glide smoothly over the bone, but when inflamed, it can become painful and obstructive. It often occurs with overuse, improper movement or due to wear and tear on the hip joint.

Complaints

Bursitis Subtrochanterica can lead to:

  • Pain on the outside of the hip, often radiating to thigh or knee
  • Pain when lying on hip, climbing stairs or standing for long periods of time
  • Stiffness or decreased mobility of the hip
  • Swelling or tenderness at the level of the outside of the hip

What can a podiatrist do?

Although a podiatrist cannot treat inflammation directly, he or she can help reduce hip strain. Treatment options may include:

  • Analysis of gait and posture technique to reduce overexertion
  • Advice on shoes, soles and cushioning to support correct leg alignment
  • Exercises to improve muscle balance and stability of the hip and legs
  • Collaboration with physical therapists or physicians for an integrated approach

Recovery

Rehabilitation focuses on reducing pain and preventing recurrent strain. With proper support, movement modifications and targeted exercises, pressure on the hip can be reduced, allowing the inflammation to heal better and making movement more comfortable again.
