What is a callus?
Calluses, also called hyperkeratosis, are a thickening of the skin on the feet. It results from prolonged pressure or friction on certain areas, such as from ill-fitting footwear or intense walking or sports. Calluses often feel hard and can sometimes be painful, especially when pressure is applied.
Complaints
Calluses can lead to various complaints, such as:
- Pain or pressure sensitivity when walking or standing
- Hard, dry spots on the heel, ball of the foot or toes
- Risk of cracking or infection with deep calluses
- Reduced walking comfort due to pain or imbalanced pressure distribution
What can a podiatrist do?
A podiatrist can professionally remove calluses and address the cause of excessive pressure. This can include:
- The safe removal of calluses and fissures
- Advice on shoes and socks to reduce friction
- Fitting orthotics or insoles to relieve pressure points
- Treatment of additional skin problems such as corns or fungi
Recovery
Callus repair focuses on reducing pain and preventing new callus formation. Regular care, pressure relief and proper shoes and orthotics can significantly reduce symptoms. In addition, skin care advice and foot care routines help keep skin supple and healthy, reducing the risk of recurring calluses.
