Hallux Rigidus / Limitus

What is Hallux Rigidus / Limitus?

Hallux Rigidus and Hallux Limitus are disorders of the joint of the big toe. In Hallux Limitus, the joint's mobility is limited, while in Hallux Rigidus, the joint has become stiff and almost unable to move. This is often caused by wear and tear (osteoarthritis), overuse or previous injuries.

Complaints

Hallux Rigidus / Limitus can lead to:

  • Pain when bending the big toe, especially when walking or climbing stairs
  • Stiffness and reduced joint mobility
  • Swelling or redness around the joint
  • Callus formation or pressure points due to misalignment or altered load

What can a podiatrist do?

A podiatrist examines the position and mobility of the big toe and assesses the load during walking. Treatment options may include:

  • Advice on shoes with enough space or a reinforced sole to reduce pressure
  • Orthotics or orthotics to correct the strain on the big toe
  • Exercises for mobility and muscle balance
  • Treatment of additional skin problems such as calluses or corns

Recovery

Recovery focuses on pain reduction, maintaining or improving range of motion and preventing further wear and tear. Through correct shoes, support with soles and targeted exercises, the load on the joint can be reduced, making walking more comfortable again and reducing symptoms. Although the joint may often be permanently restricted, complaints can be effectively managed.
