What is a Jumper's Knee?
Sweater's Knee, medically known as patella tendinopathy, is an overuse injury of the tendon just below the kneecap (patellar tendon). It is common in athletes who jump or have a lot of explosive knee loading, such as volleyball, basketball and track and field. Repeated strain can irritate the tendon, causing pain and stiffness.
Complaints
Sweater's Knee can lead to:
- Pain under or around the kneecap, especially during jumping, running or bending over
- Stiffness and sensitivity of the patellar tendon
- Swelling or thickening of the tendon with prolonged irritation
- Decreased strength or stability in the leg
What can a podiatrist do?
A podiatrist can help reduce overuse and repair the patellar tendon:
- Analysis of gait pattern, foot position and knee loading during sports
- Advice on shoes, cushioning and possibly orthotics to relieve knee strain
- Exercises for muscle balance, flexibility and leg strength
- Collaboration with physical therapists or sports physicians for an integrated approach
Recovery
Rehabilitation focuses on pain reduction and prevention of recurring symptoms. Proper support, appropriate loading and targeted exercises allow the patellar tendon to heal, restoring comfort to sports and daily activities. Rest and a gradual build-up of load are essential for full recovery.
