clubfoot (Pes Equinovarus)

What are clubfeet?

Clog feet, medically known as Pes Equinovarus, are congenital foot deformities in which the foot is in a twisted, inwardly and sometimes downwardly bent position. It can affect one or both feet and varies in severity. Clog feet are often diagnosed at birth and require early treatment to promote normal foot function.

Complaints

Clumsy feet can lead to:

  • Difficulty walking or pain with movement
  • Difficulty wearing normal shoes
  • Muscle tension and shortening of tendons and joints
  • Reduced mobility of the foot

What can a podiatrist do?

A podiatrist guides foot development and treats strain during movement. Treatment options may include:

  • Advice on adapted footwear or orthopaedic shoes
  • Orthotics or orthotics to support the foot and correct its position
  • Exercises for mobility and muscle development
  • Aftercare after any operations or plaster treatments

Recovery

Rehabilitation focuses on improving function, mobility and reducing pain. Early and targeted guidance, combined with appropriate support and exercises, allows the foot to develop in the best possible way, making walking and movement more comfortable. Although some abnormalities may be permanent, the quality of walking can greatly improve and complications can be reduced.
