Kneecap/knee pain (Patellofemoral pain syndrome)

What is kneecap pain?

Kneecap pain is often caused by an incorrect position of the feet, legs or knees. Overuse or misalignment can increase pressure on the kneecap, causing pain during movement, climbing stairs or sports.

Complaints

  • Pain around or behind the kneecap
  • Pain when climbing stairs, squatting or running
  • Stiffness or swelling of the knee
  • Tired feeling in the legs during prolonged activity

What can a podiatrist do?

  • Examination of foot position and gait pattern
  • Orthotics or orthotics to correct position and load
  • Advice on footwear and exercise habits
  • Exercises to support muscles and joints

Recovery

Rehabilitation focuses on pain reduction and improving the knee's load capacity. By better supporting the feet and legs and doing targeted exercises, the pressure on the kneecap can decrease and pain-free movement can become possible again.
