Diabetic podiatry
When you have diabetes, taking good care of your feet is extra important. Small changes can lead to problems faster, which is precisely why timely and expert monitoring is essential. As podiatrists, we are happy to help you keep your feet healthy and mobile.
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a condition in which the body cannot regulate blood sugar levels properly. Due to a lack of insulin or reduced sensitivity to insulin, too much sugar remains in the blood. This can cause damage to nerves and blood vessels, especially in the feet.
What is diabetes podiatry?
In diabetes, nerves and blood vessels in the feet can be affected. This reduces sensation, makes wounds heal slower and can cause complications earlier. Diabetic podiatry focuses on the prevention, early detection and treatment of these foot problems.
What does a diabetes podiatrist do?
A diabetes podiatrist performs, among other things:
- Examination of skin, nails, circulation and sensation
- Detecting pressure spots and abnormal foot positions
- Fitting orthotics or orthotics
- Preventive treatments to prevent wounds
- Shoe advice and guidance on choosing appropriate footwear
- Collaboration with other healthcare professionals in wound care
The aim is to keep your feet healthy, prevent wounds and support your mobility.
You were referred through your GP
You have been referred through your GP for a diabetic foot screening. During this screening, we as podiatrists take a detailed look at the condition of your feet. Among other things, we assess blood flow, sensation, skin, nails and any pressure spots or position deviations.
Based on this, we determine what care is needed. Sometimes periodic check-ups suffice, but treatments by the podiatrist or (reimbursed) pedicure treatments may also be advised. We always clearly explain which care falls within the reimbursement and what you can expect from us.
