Hallux Abducto Valgus (crooked big toe / HAV)

What is Hallux Abducto Valgus?

Hallux Abducto Valgus, often abbreviated as HAV, is a misalignment of the big toe where it bends outwards towards the second toe. This often creates a lump at the base of the big toe. HAV can be hereditary, but is also affected by incorrect footwear, wearing high heels for long periods of time or foot abnormalities.

Complaints

HAV can cause various symptoms, such as:

  • Pain or pressure on the tubercle of the big toe
  • Redness, irritation or callus formation around the joint
  • Difficulty with shoes or limited fit
  • Sometimes position changes of the other toes

What can a podiatrist do?

A podiatrist examines the foot, the position of the big toe and the way you walk. Treatment may include:

  • Advice on well-fitting footwear to reduce pressure
  • Fitting orthotics or orthotics to improve foot position
  • Foot and toe exercises to improve stability and muscle balance
  • Treatment of calluses, corns or other skin problems caused by the misalignment

Recovery

Rehabilitation in HAV focuses on reducing pain, preventing worsening of the misalignment and improving walking comfort. Correcting the foot position with orthotics, wearing appropriate shoes and performing exercises can reduce the strain on the big toe, reducing pain and limiting further symptoms. Although the misalignment is often permanent, symptoms can be effectively managed.
