X-legs (Genoa Valga)

What are X-legs?

X-legs, medically known as Genoa Valga, are legs in which the knees are inward while the ankles are apart. This gives the legs an “X-shape.” X-legs can be congenital, hereditary, or caused by overuse, joint problems or muscle weakness.

Complaints

X-legs can lead to:

  • Pain in knees, hips or ankles due to misaligned loads
  • Fatigue or tension in the legs
  • Reduced stability when standing, walking or exercising
  • Increased wear in the knee or hip joints

What can a podiatrist do?

A podiatrist examines the position of the feet, legs and knees and assesses the strain during movement. Treatment options may include:

  • Orthotics or orthotics to correct foot and leg positions
  • Advice on footwear and cushioning to reduce overexertion
  • Exercises for stability, muscle balance and posture

Recovery

Recovery focuses on improving balance, reducing pain and preventing further symptoms or wear and tear. With proper support and targeted exercises, pressure on joints can be better distributed, making movement more comfortable. Although the position of the legs cannot always be completely corrected, symptoms can be effectively managed and the risk of future problems reduced.
